Cascabel Taqueria
When I started subletting in Yorkville for the summer, the main tenant went to great lengths to convince me that the Upper East Side was a great place to eat. She noted three things in particular: Justin Timberlake’s Southern Hospitality, Land Thai‘s lunch special, and most importantly, Cascabel Taqueria. I’m happy to report, she was right.
Located at 1542 2nd Ave., between 80th and 81st, this place is always packed, open late, and always delicious. This isn’t your typical ‘Mexican’ joint, so don’t expect your waiter to fling you a bowl of chips and salsa. Instead, Start by bellying up to the bar and getting a Negro Modelo draught or one of their many bottled beers. Then, sit down (inside or outside) and get a little bit messy with the Gorditas con Puerco. These little pork belly sandwiches will have you licking your fingers clean.
Next up, order three types of tacos to share with your companion (you didn’t come alone did you?!). I recommend the Carnitas, Pollo Chipotle, and Camaron. While you are waiting for your tacos, pick up a rack of the salsas from the center table and enjoy some old school Luchador movies starring El Santo or El Demonio Azul on the big screen. Cascabel also offers a number of sides, deserts, and main plates – but the tacos are where it’s at.
At the end of your meal, order some sangria and relive the gustatory pleasure in your mind — but don’t linger too long. Chances are, I’m walking over, hungry, and you’re at my table!
